Christie Denson Verve Cup - Sunday Race Report

Sunday, August 16, 2009 (CHICAGO) -- The word of the day is carnage. Thankfully all competitors and race committee are accounted for after a wet and wild day on the lake, complete with blown spinnakers, broaches, man-overboards, and even a capsized race committee boat. Testing the boat handling skills of the crews, the morning winds were the strongest of the regatta, blowing about 15-20 knots. Mains were reefed, and some boats were on the run without spinnakers. But it was the afternoon storm c… Continue

Christie Denson Verve Cup – Saturday Race Report

Saturday, August 15, 2009 (CHICAGO) -- Sunshine and a steady lake breeze at 5-10 knots made for another great day on the water in the 2009 Verve Cup Offshore Regatta, hosted this weekend by Chicago Yacht Club. Winds were out of the southeast for most of the afternoon, however a few tricky wind shifts kept the competitors on their game. Some tactical moves around the shifts played out to be more favorable than others, and there were many lead changes throughout the day. “What can I say, we had… Continue

Christie Denson J109s see tight racing in Day 1 of Verve Cup

August 13, 2009 (CHICAGO) -- The J109 fleet kicked off racing today for the 2009 Verve Cup and the start of their North American Championships. Despite the light winds from 3-8 knots from the east and east-southeast, the fleet was able to complete three races for a sunny day of sailing on Lake Michigan. Today’s racing made for some very tight competition. Angela Solomon Verve Inshore Report - Sunday

Another fantastic day of racing was the reward for racers who took to Lake Michigan for day two of CYC's Inshore Verve. Some teams were fighting to hold their positions from yesterday, and others were trying to move up, but quality racing was the name of the day for all. Unique to a windy Chicago southwesterly was the pressure increase as the boats approached shore; a race might start in 12kts and build to 20 at the windward mark, only to drop moving down the course! On Shields 88, we nickmamed… Continue
