Verve Cup 2010 - End of Day 2 Race Report

August 21, 2010 (CHICAGO) – Light winds set the pace for the second day of the 2010 Verve Cup Offshore Regatta, as sailors faced postponements on Circle A and C until after 1:00 p.m. today.

“The day started off a complete drifter and didn’t pick up until 12 or 1 depending on which circle you were in,” explained Winn Soldani of the Verve Committee. “Today was a day for light air boats and light air racers and a test of patience for most on the course.”

In addition to three circles of windward/leeward racing, nine cruiser/racers competed in a distance race. Originally set for 28 miles, the Race Committee shortened the course to 13.25 miles given the conditions. Today’s Distance Race winner is Greg Miarecki and crew on Providence, an Ericson 35.

“We were constantly working the boat, change sails as often as we needed to,” Miarecki explained on managing the light air today. “Nobody let up, because we know it’s always going to be close and we need every minute.”

Providence
will be awarded the 8-Mile Buoy Trophy at tomorrow’s Awards ceremony. “We are truly honored to have won the 8-Mile Buoy Trophy and we appreciate Chicago Yacht Club’s fantastic race management. They are the best Race Committee on earth,” Miarecki added.

On Circle B, American Flyer maintained their lead among the T-10 fleet. “The race was challenging because you had big shifts and it was a challenge in picking the right side, anticipating the shifts,” owner Steve Knoop said. On his goals for the final day of the regatta he added, “With a lead like ours you have to play a conservative race and don’t give away anything huge. Win the regatta and remember that this is a series. Don’t try and go for broke and win the race. Try and be consistent in the series.”

American Flyer
and the other 148 boats in the regatta will finish the series tomorrow with racing beginning at 9:30 a.m. “The Race Committee hopes to get two races in tomorrow,” explained Mary Ann Lillie, Verve Committee Chair. Conditions look heavy tomorrow, with a small craft advisory and strong winds forecasted.

We will continue to bring you race updates, photos and of course the final results, so stay tuned. Chicago Yacht Club is proud to host this prestigious sailing event, and welcomes you to be a part of all of the action this weekend. The race would not be possible without the support of Audi of America, SLAM, as well as Supporters and Suppliers Karma Yacht Sales, UK Halsey Sails, West Marine, Modelo Especial and Mount Gay Rum.
