Verve Cup Regatta

Friday, August 14, 2009 (CHICAGO) -- Close competition kept racing interesting for the 161 boats in the 2009 Verve Cup Offshore, as the jets buzzed overhead in practice for this weekend’s Air & Water Show. Winds were light but steady throughout the afternoon, at about 5-10 knots from the south and southeast. All three circles were able to get in three races for a beautiful day on the lake.

“It was a fabulous day of racing. The winds filled-in nicely to make for a good day on the water,” said Bryan from the T-10, T Time.

Today’s leader board was changing down to the last race, making for a great start to Chicago Yacht Club’s annual Verve Cup regatta.

On Circle A, it was double bullets for many top finishers in the first two races. The bullets enabled Convexity to lead the Farr 40s, however they remain matched with Flash Gordon at 7 points. Les Ziolkowski and crew on Pinball Wizard have three bullets in PHRF 1. Stan Bailey’s Raven leads PHRF 2 and DeVos’ Melges 32 Alpha One, leads PHRF 3, also with three bullets.

The Beneteau 40.7 Championships kicked off on Circle B today with very tight racing. Going in to race three, Bob Vickery on Collaboration II, was leading, but after a 10th place finish in the third race by Vickery, Jim McDonnell on Spanker moved into the top spot. Tried and True leads the 36.7s, Vytis leads the J105s, and in day two of the J109 North Americans, Storm has maintained their strong lead in this 14 boat championship. In PHRF 4 Gauntlet leads by a point, proving, once again, the difference a race makes.

“It was a great day of racing, but there were some big shifts. I think everyone who won a race lost a race, too,” said crewmember of J105 Gigi.

On Circle C, the largest fleet in the regatta, the T-10s, are led by Skidmarks, owned by Lou Jacob. In PHRF 5, Ed Bayer’s Falcon had three bullets for the day, followed closely by Aftershock with 6 points. In PHRF 6, Twisted Fish, owned by Rolland Cohee is in the top spot and leading PHRF 7, is Awesome, owned by Bill and Vivian Smith.
