Verve Cup – Saturday Race Report

Saturday, August 15, 2009 (CHICAGO) -- Sunshine and a steady lake breeze at 5-10 knots made for another great day on the water in the 2009 Verve Cup Offshore Regatta, hosted this weekend by Chicago Yacht Club.

Winds were out of the southeast for most of the afternoon, however a few tricky wind shifts kept the competitors on their game. Some tactical moves around the shifts played out to be more favorable than others, and there were many lead changes throughout the day.

“What can I say, we had a bad start, but the wind shifted in our favor and we lucked out,” said Bob Foley, skipper of the Beneteau 36.7 Tried and True, after a bullet in his second race of the day.

A little bit of luck, combined with good boat handling and tactics among the fleets, kept competition strong on all three circles of racing, complete with some lively and vocal mark roundings. This action helps add to the excitement of course racing, and is characterized as the Verve “Swerve,” also for which this evening’s post-race party is named.

“Viva la Verve!” the crew from J 105 Vytis shouted, which is exactly what we hope Sunday will bring, as the regatta moves into the final day of racing tomorrow.
